Research Interests
The main focus of our research is on lichens taxonomy, biodiversity assessment, ecology, biomonitoring, climate change and lichenometric studies in the alpine areas. The molecular systematic approaches on Indian lichens are our ongoing research. We have successfully studied and resolved a number of taxonomic complex and ambiguities on two largest groups of lichens i.e. Teloschistaceae and Cetrarioid group of lichens in India. We are involved in exploring the lichen diversity of various Indian states, namely Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand, and of states in the north east region, namely Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim and Shillong. We are also working on assessment of ethno-medicinally important lichens and characterization of their medicinal potential. These studies are help to prepare local or regional inventories of lichens but also play vital role in development of database on Indian lichens to depict the clear picture of lichen diversity in India and use in other biomonitoring and conservational studies.
Focused Research Area:
- Lichen systematic (revisionary and floristic diversity assessment).
- Ecology and conservation of lichens.
- Lichenicolous and Endolichenic fungi.
- Biodeterioration
- Biomonitoring air pollution and climate change.
- Bioprospecting lichens for medicinal values.
- Lichen mycobiont culture

Research Summary
- The revisionary studies on genus, family, or a group of related taxa are studied. The groups parmelioid lichens, pyrenocarpous lichens and cetrarioid lichens, families Teloschistacae and genera Acarospora, Myriospora, Parmotrema, Phyllospora, Phlyctis and Pyrenula are studied.
- In floristic studies several states and ecologically interesting habitats which were unexplored earlier were studied in details (Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Sikkim, Shillong, Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand,). At present molecular phylogeny has become an essential tool in lichen systematic.
- Assessment and conservation studies of protected areas such as Bhimashankar Wildlife Sanctuary, Maharashtra and Govind Wildlife Sanctuary, Garhwal Himalaya, Uttarakhand.
- Explore endolichenic fungi from temperate regions of Kumaun Himalaya, Uttarakhand.
- Biodeterioration studies have been done in monuments of Uttar Pradesh.
- Biomonitoring air pollution and climate change has been done to assess the level and possible sources of organic and inorganic pollutants in Himalayan region and their effect on naturally growing foliose lichen Pyxine cocoes (Sw.) Nyl.
- The medicinal properties or biological activities of lichens have been documented from the tribal community of Himalayan region for the development of value added products.
- In vitro culture of lichen mycobiont Pyxine cocoes luxuriantly grown in Uttar Pradesh has been carried out for producing commercially important secondary metabolites.
- More than 40 lichens species discovered as new to India.
