Prof. S.K. Barik is Director, CSIR-National Botanical Research Institute, Lucknow. Before joining CSIR, he was Head, Department of Botany, and Centre for Advanced Studies in Botany, North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong. For the past three decades, he has been active in diverse areas of plant science research such as plant diversity including its inventory, bio-prospection and conservation, ecological modeling, population and molecular ecology, chemical ecology, carbon sequestration and impact of climate change on species and ecosystems. Prof. Barik has successfully demonstrated the value addition of turmeric through production of turmeric leaf oil and oleoresin at community level in Meghalaya. He has published 110 research papers, 12 books and 40 technical and research reports. Fourteen students have been awarded Ph.D. degree under his supervision.
He was selected as a LEAD Fellow by the Leadership in Environment and Development International, Rockefeller Foundation, USA. He is also a Fellow of National Academy of Sciences India, Fellow of National Academy of Agricultural Sciences, and Fellow of International Society for Environmental Botanists. He was conferred the Biodiversity Lecture Award, 2019 by National Academy of Sciences India, Professor Birbal Sahani Medal, 2019 by Indian Botanical Society, Dr. Mopuri Brahmam Memorial Award by Orissa Botanical Society, and Dr. Brandis Award, 2009 by Indian Forester.
He is Associate Editor of Tropical Ecology (Springer), Editor of Journal of Biodiversity (Taylor and Francis), and Guest Editor of Current Science He is/was the Chairperson/Member of several national expert committees/task forces constituted by the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change (MoEF&CC), Planning Commission, Department of Biotechnology (DBT), Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), and Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India.
